It was a great and another peaceful day for Father Michael L. Pfleger and the Auburn Gresham community Saturday as volunteers including some of the brothers from the street organization who were involved with the Saint Sabina Peace Tournament passed out nearly 1,000 chickens--an act of giving Pfleger says can be replicated around the nation for our daily tragedies like hunger and homelessness.

“The need is greater than ever,” said Pfleger who cast his eyes over the long line of people waiting for a free chicken. “People are struggling to put food on their table and the Hear Foundation was gracious to offer again this year to give us these chickens.

“The need is greater than ever,” said Pfleger who cast his eyes over the long line of people waiting for a free chicken. “People are struggling to put food on their table and the Hear Foundation was gracious to offer again this year to give us these chickens.

“We have catastrophes all over this country of hunger, poverty and homelessness. If we learn from what is happening on the East Coast, if we learn to come together around this country, be Americans again and care for and take care of each other, there is enough to go around,” Pfleger said.

“Let’s not wait for the horrific tragedy. Let’s deal with the daily tragedies. Let’s care for each other and nobody has to suffer,” he stated.  Pfleger praised the street members for help in distributing the chickens saying they enjoyed giving back.

Father Pfleger was also elated that this is the seventh week since the Peace Tournament held on September 22, 2012 at the Saint Sabina ARK where leaders form four street organizations came together for a day of peace and played basketball one of whom had shot one of his opponents months before.

Pfleger said, “We are going to begin a 12-week Peacemakers League with six teams starting November 19th. I love these brothers.”
